Located within the historic streetscape of Nozawa Onsen, required a comprehensive renovation, including seismic reinforcement. Situated in the heart of Nozawa Onsen, directly across from the Oyu public bath, the project prioritized not only functional upgrades—such as improvements to heating systems and soundproofing—but also the restoration of the building’s core elements, including the roof and structural framework, which had long remained unchanged in this heavy snowfall region.

Respecting the traditional Japanese shakkanho measurement system, the design process preserved as much of the original structure as possible, while carefully examining and integrating new elements with the existing building down to the finest details.

Materials and finishes were selected with great care to harmonize with traditional Japanese architecture. At the same time, the project aimed to appeal to an international clientele by infusing the hotel with both the spirit of “wa” (Japanese harmony) and a contemporary sensibility.
